Choosing Between Pneumatic and Cushion Tires
Considerably contributing to the safety and handling of the equipment are forklift tires. They also affect the maintenance costs. The type of forklift would determine to a large extent the type of tire since nearly all forklifts are constructed with a specific frame that accepts just a specific type of tire. It helps to know the properties of both cushion and pneumatic tires before selecting a tire.
Instructions
1 Check your forklift owner guidebook for specifications regarding tires. Most likely your forklift runs either on pneumatic tires or cushion tires. This will limit your options to the type of tire wherein the forklift frame is constructed.
2 Check the kind of forklift. Electric forklift trucks and electric pallet jack trucks usually are made to utilize cushion tires which do not need a lot of friction. Pneumatic tires are normally for forklifts which function on liquid propane gas or diesel.
3 Check the type of terrain. Soft cushion tires are constructed for even terrain while pneumatic tires are suitable for rough grounds. Cushion tires, if utilized on grounds which are uneven, can cause the forklift to get stuck as they are set lower. Pneumatic tires perform well on gravel, packed stones and crushed concrete but not on very rough terrain and potholed surfaces.
4 Check space limitations. Forklifts used mainly for indoor applications need to be able to pivot in tight areas. Cushion tires really work better than pneumatic tires in those kinds of situations.
