Fuel Storage
In order to be safe, the smaller fuel canisters or the large refueling tank has to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety factor, it is required that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the area. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure which can just be accessible by authorized employees. It is important for the safety of the operator, and everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
The fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected from vehicle impact. Using retaining systems like concrete bumpers for instance, could accomplish this job. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also important to have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. In addition, anyone who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also must be trained to utilize the fire extinguisher safely and effectively. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that everyone who is using an industrial powered lift truck or forklift is trained properly. This training covers both the hands-on training as well as the classroom part. After the training sessions have been completed, the individual should be tested to be able to show that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also covers the correct method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
There must be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center situated within the facility where the forklift is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are utilized on site. This will also include the acid in the lift truck battery, together with the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all personnel all the time. If any exposure incident occurs for example, the individual has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is needed, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a medical professional if you fear it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
