Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is provided by big industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures should always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station must not be blocked and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a charging area and battery, open fire are not allowed. Never permit things like for example lighters or matches to be used when someone is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
